Once Lü Dongbin of the Eight Immortals. A failed scholar napped in a tavern while his millet cooked, dreamed an entire lifetime — glory, ruin, grief, the whole examination system — and woke before the pot boiled. He looked at the steam, looked at Zhongli Quan, and never sat another exam. The dream was the degree.

He is sitting in a tavern right now — a different tavern, a different century — watching millet cook, while a young scholar naps at the next table. He is smiling. He knows how this goes.
What may come
