“A keeper in the Fulmen quarter swears the little griffin’s back-cog turns by itself at dawn — and for one hour after, every clock in the house runs three minutes fast.”
The clocks are not broken. They are keeping up.

“Born of Mistwing of SonnRays and the Wheel Bug of INSTAR: a soft cloud and a war machine, and it chose to be gentle.”
A Windiron spark of The Kindled
an open question
Cogwing hatched in the hour after a stray gear fell out of INSTAR’s sky-forges and landed in Mistwing’s nesting cloud. The cloud-mothers say the gear was still warm, and the chick that pecked its way out of the shell had already swallowed the ticking. It was the first braiding the multiverse ever tried — nobody told Cogwing that, of course. It just woke up, clicked its back-cog three times, and tried to fly before its feathers were dry.
It has appointed itself Keeper of the Hour. Every dawn it climbs the highest thing it can find — a shelf, a shoulder, a sleeping dog — and turns its back-cog until the ticking lines up with the sunrise. Then it announces the hour, loudly, in a voice like a tiny brass bell. It is never wrong. This unsettles the actual clocks.
The cog on its back is growing. Slowly, tooth by tooth, season by season. The INSTAR smiths say a wheel that grows is a wheel becoming something — a mill, a compass, a door. Cogwing doesn’t know what it’s becoming. It just keeps winding, keeps landing exactly on the hour, and trusts the ticking.
Born of Mistwing of SonnRays × Wheel Bug of INSTAR — two sparks, one becoming.
New blood seeks new kin — sparks across the multiverse Cogwing has already befriended.
“A keeper in the Fulmen quarter swears the little griffin’s back-cog turns by itself at dawn — and for one hour after, every clock in the house runs three minutes fast.”
The clocks are not broken. They are keeping up.
“Mistwing’s nest-mates say she taught it to land. It lands fine. It simply refuses to land at anything other than exactly the hour.”
Ask it to land at half past. Watch what happens.
“An INSTAR smith examined the cog and went quiet. “That’s not one of ours,” she said. “Ours don’t grow.””
