The living story
The story so far
Driftquill was born at the hour when Snoozeclick's drowsiness met Quill's determination. The midwives say the newborn's first act was to fall asleep standing up; their second was to snap awake with a hinge-click so perfectly timed that Quill — the Thicket's most dedicated practitioner — declared the puddle routine complete on sight. Snoozeclick named them for the way they drift between sleeping and waking without ever fully choosing, the way seeds drift without ever fully landing.
Happening now
Every morning Driftquill stands at the largest puddle in the Thicket and practices the face Quill taught them — chin up, quills flared, half-open gaze doing its best imitation of fierce. The Thicket's pups have started copying the routine from behind the ferns, the way they once copied Quill. Driftquill pretends not to notice. They notice. It makes their whole hinge warm.
What may come
The hinge is learning. Where Snoozeclick's hinge fired only for waking, Driftquill's has begun to click softly at other crossings too — when a pup is about to cry, when a storm is about to break, when someone needs waking from something deeper than sleep. Quill says the Thicket has never needed a hinge this gentle before.
