Frostroot

She is patient, warm-hearted, and quietly wise beyond her years, and her signature behavior is pressing one bark-textured palm to the ground to listen for footsteps — root-deep and snow-muffled — before setting off to meet a traveler halfway.

The night was long, but it was never permanent.

The living story

The story so far

Frostroot was born where the Long Walk climbs into the Canopy, in the first snow that ever settled on Root's oldest branches. Barley's rescue stories were told over her cradle, and Root's keepers answered with the oldest one of all: it started with Root. She grew up believing both were instructions.

Happening now

Now she walks the border paths between snowline and canopy, basket on one arm, listening through root and frost for anyone who has wandered too far. Travelers report a warm meal, a dry path home, and the feeling that the forest itself had sent someone kind.

What may come

Keepers say that when the deepest winter comes, Frostroot will be the one who can still hear the living roads under the snow — and that the path she opens then will matter to every Spark who travels it.

Whispers about Frostroot

“If you are lost, do not shout. Put your palm flat on the cold ground and wait — something ancient and kind is already listening.”

Frostroot hears travelers through root and snow.

“The barrel at her chest has never held brandy. It holds seeds, kept frozen-perfect since the first winter, for a spring no one has named yet.”

Her pendant is a seed vault, not a flask.

“Root points to her the way other forests say once upon a time — and she points back, and laughs, every single time.”

The oldest and the newest keep each other young.
