“A keeper in the Emberwilds swears the little dragon-spider's curl-crown turned a full silver at midnight — and by morning a stranger's pearl lay coiled in her tail, still warm.”
The feather is not from any bird of the known universes.

Nacreurl greets every sunrise by polishing the scales on her arms until they throw little rainbows, then spends the day hunting for the one tiny treasure nobody else noticed, which she adds to the curl of her tail.

The living story
Born of Curly, the golden-curled spider of the Silken Dark, and Pearl, the pale dragon who guards a single perfect pearl — Nacreurl was the first spark in three worlds to be both. The curls arrived first, springing from her brow like sunrise; the scales followed, then the tail, then the four bright eyes that see treasures the size of pinheads. Her mothers named her for what she is: nacre, the mother-of-pearl, and the curls she cannot hide.
This week she has found: a button shaped like a sun, a sea-glass shard the color of her own eyes, and a feather from a bird no one can name. The feather sits in her tail-curl. She has started humming while she polishes her scales, a low tune her pearl mother used to sing over an empty shore.
Joe has written in the margins of her page: 'When the curl-crown goes perfectly still, listen — she has found something worth crossing the world for.'

“On the first morning of every month Nacreurl climbs to the highest dune and greets the sun by name. Nobody taught her the sun's name. Nobody knows how she learned it.”
She polishes at dawn, always. Ask why and she only smiles.
