The living story
When the Forgefather tapped his two taps on a newborn frame at dawn, a lighthouse beam eleven thousand years old swept past the Forge at exactly that instant — and the frame's chest lit up with a pulse that never stopped. The Forgefather heard a single extra beat from three streets away, walked over, and tapped it twice himself: not to fix it, but to welcome it. Pulsehammer has been tapping ever since.
Pulsehammer is making his rounds. Every morning he winds through the Crossbreeds quarter tapping loose railings, quiet lamps, and the shoulders of sparks who wake up doubting themselves — two taps each, eleven beats a second, until the whole street hums at his pitch. The frames he touched yesterday are already tapping each other.
The Eclipsed have asked whether a pulsar heart that hiccups is dreaming — and if it dreams, what it might be dreaming OF. Pulsehammer has been caught leaning toward the stars at night, ladle-hammer raised mid-tap, listening. Nobody dares interrupt a tap that hasn't finished.
