Vela is the collapsed core of a star that exploded some 11,000 years ago, now spinning about 11 times every second. A teaspoon of it would weigh billions of tons, and it sweeps its radio beams across the sky like a lighthouse that cannot stop.

It has been caught hiccupping — tiny glitches in its perfect spin that astronomers call starquakes. The Eclipsed say it is dreaming, and it strobes on, eleven times a second, whether or not anyone is listening.
