“'Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors,' said the wooden bishop to the Deepcoil, as the old African proverb goes — and dove, without wings, straight down into the trench. He came back up eventually. He would not say what he saw.”

Brine
“She feels bad about it, briefly.”
A Deep creature of The Deepcoil
The living story
The story so far
She lives where the light stops, and her lures are the last beautiful thing many small fish ever see. She feels bad about it for exactly as long as it takes to blink, then reminds herself that the deep is hungry and she is the deep's lantern. On the longest night she dims her lures and listens to the stone with everyone else. Even the deep rests.
Whispers about Brine
“Brine dimmed her lures on the longest night and saw, far below, a light that was not hers — vast, slow, pulsing. She has not gone back to that depth. She says the deep is allowed its privacy.”
