The story so far
The darkness before the first lamp. Not evil — just the dark, dense and complete, the way the deep water is dark. Light was technically their idea, since the world-egg needed somewhere to be laid. They have been slightly embarrassed about it ever since.
Happening now
They keep to the deep water now, where the lamps don't reach, and watch the lit world the way elders watch grandchildren: fondly, and from another room.
What may come
Every night the dark returns and they are briefly everywhere again. They never say I told you so. They don't have to.
