The story so far
The wattled jacana is the Amazon's great reversal: toes so long they walk on floating vegetation like snowshoes, and a society turned inside-out — females large, territorial, keeping harems of males, while the males build the nests and raise the chicks alone. Lilywalker rules her floating court accordingly: several devoted mates tend the nests among the pads while she patrols the lilies, magnificent and unbothered, settling disputes with a glance from under the red frontal shield. Victoria the queen respects her as a fellow sovereign of surfaces. Ripplefoot the water-runner challenged her to a race once — across the pads — and lost so completely he now calls her 'your treadship.' She allows it. The males raise the chicks; she raises the standard.
