Thirty-six star-groups painted on coffin lids, rising in turn through the night — the oldest clock in the world, and it only tells time for the dead. Each decan rules its ten days; each night, they rise on schedule.

They are rising on schedule, as always. The dead are the only ones watching, and the dead appreciate punctuality.

They will still be rising when every coffin lid has rotted. The clock does not need the coffin.
