A Nightbelly reptile of The River Tyrants

He was born dark in a dark river and never saw a reason to be anything else. While the day shift basked and bellowed, Noir learned the night water — every current, every snag, every secret the dark keeps. He keeps them all.
He runs the night patrol: who’s moving, who’s hiding, who needs escorting home. His reports are delivered at dawn, quietly, to Bifocal’s Logbook. The night river’s crime rate is zero. The night river’s fish are law-abiding. Mostly.
He is training two apprentices in night-water craft: "See without being seen. Know without being known." Their eyes are getting brighter. Their shadows are getting deeper. The night shift is in good hands.

The river tyrants: crocodiles, alligators, caimans, gharials — the ambush perfected over eighty million years. Fifteen smiles, every one of them full of teeth.
