The story so far
She was the shyest student in the meteorology program, the one who watched the sky instead of people. The Ringing gave her what she always wanted: a sky she could walk in. Cloudline builds staircases out of solidified cloud — vapor platforms that have evacuated two burning rooftops and one wedding. She prefers the sky. Half of Vesper has walked her stairs anyway.
Happening now
She's been quietly leaving cloud-steps at the bases of the fire-towers all week — little permanent footholds, unmarked, for whoever needs them. The Skybreakers pretend they haven't noticed. They use them daily.
What may come
Skyborn asked her for a staircase that never ends. Cloudline blushed and said she'd think about it, which in Cloudline language means she's already building it at night, where the light is kinder.
“Cloudline was building a rescue stair at dawn when she saw it — a figure on the far pier, waving slowly, the way people wave at boats. By the time she reached the pier there was no one there, but the concrete was warm, and Bedrock confirmed the warmth had weight behind it, a density no shadow should have. The figure has been seen twice more, always at dawn, always waving. The ferries have started slowing for it. The ferries are driven by professionals.”
