The living story
The story so far
She was a Coast Guard pilot, and she still flies — she just flies the sea itself now. Gyre spins whirlpools like aircraft: banked turns, barrel rolls, and a signature move the harbor kids call the washing machine. Her gyres have swallowed smuggler boats, dead mines, and one extremely rude waterspout.
Happening now
There's a dead mine drifting in the shipping lane, a leftover from somebody's old war, and Gyre is walking her whirlpool out to meet it — slow, careful, the way you'd walk a strange dog. The whole harbor is watching from the seawall. The kids are selling lemonade.
What may come
Downburst wants to try something the engineers call inadvisable: a whirlpool inside a downdraft, sea and sky spinning together. Gyre has already cleared her schedule. The harbor has been warned.
The Tidecallers
Masters of Vesper's harbor, rivers, and rain — the Tidecallers treat water as a colleague, not an obstacle. They pull the drowning from the drink, turn back storm surges, and keep the ferry lanes safe. The harbormaster's chalk tally has no column for the lost, because that column is empty.
