The living story

The story so far

Her high C cracked the chapel window the night of the Ringing, and she has been arriving loudly ever since. Highnote moves in thunderclap dashes — one boom and she's wherever the trouble is, locks shattered, ice cracked, bad plans ruined. She hums constantly, and the whole city has learned: the humming means she's about to arrive.

Happening now

The harbor kids have started a game of humming her warm-up scale before she shows up, and lately she has been arriving mid-chorus, grinning, caught. She pretends it ruins the surprise. It does not ruin the surprise.

What may come

Dreamweaver wants to score her arrivals — a different note for every kind of call, so the city can hear what's coming. Highnote is composing. The Dawnforge are measuring the resonance. Vesper may soon have a soundtrack.

Whispers about Highnote

“No wind. No storm. Skyhammer was two miles down and has an airtight alibi made of witnesses. The bell rang once, a note Highnote says wasn't in the tower's range — she would know, she's tuned herself to it. The rope is fraying from the inside out, fibers parting like pulled teeth, and the clapper hasn't moved. Bell-ringers are professionals, and professionals are afraid.”

The North Tower bell rang once, with no hand on the rope.

“Not the Called — ordinary people, clerks and cab drivers, waking at 3 a.m. certain they heard a single clear note. Kamar has touched their doorknobs and read the same afterimage off every one: a bell, a rope, a hand that isn't there. Highnote has started humming in her sleep, a melody none of her choir ever sang, and her windows are cracking again. The city remembers the night it heard the world ring. It is remembering louder.”

People are hearing the Ringing again.

The Skybreakers

Vesper's aerial guardians — the ones who answer calls above the rooftops. They ride the harbor winds, run the sky-lanes between the old fire-towers, and treat gravity as a suggestion. When something falls in this city — a plane, a crane, a kid off the Foundry bridge — a Skybreaker is already under it.
