The story so far
She was an orbital mechanic, and the Ringing found her through her headset, past the static. Stratos keeps the sky-lanes clear of falling satellites and falling egos, watching Vesper from the edge of space so long that the city looks like a held breath to her. She comes down for two things: disasters, and her mother's cooking.
Happening now
A decommissioned relay satellite started tumbling toward the harbor this week, and Stratos simply walked it down the sky like a stray dog on a leash, parking it in a safe orbit. She waved at the tracking stations on the way past. They waved back. Everyone knows her up there now.
What may come
She's been mapping the dark between the stars for the Mindfire — places where thought goes quiet. Noosphere says it hums like a held note. Stratos says it's waiting. Nobody knows what for, and she isn't saying.
“The lanes between the fire-towers are the Skybreakers' roads, and every mile of them hums — except the Foundry span, which went perfectly silent at 2:47 a.m. for exactly eleven minutes. Stratos watched from the edge of space and saw the silence had an edge, like a cloud with a coastline. Wisp sent her ball-lightning scouts through it and they came back out of order, one missing, the rest dimmer. The missing one found its own way home at dawn. It won't say where it's been.”
