The living story

The story so far

She was a night-shift nurse, and she still is, in the ways that count. Wisp sends ball-lightning scouts ahead of every call — little lights that have found lost hikers, mapped blackouts, and once led a whole wedding party out of a storm. She calls them her fireflies. They follow her home.

Happening now

A child wandered off from the night market into the warehouse district, and Wisp's fireflies are out in a widening net of gold, checking every dark corner. The Shadowline are walking with them. The whole night shift is awake.

What may come

Lucid wants to send a firefly into a dream — to walk a nightmare with real light. Wisp is teaching the lights to be gentle. The Mindfire say the dreams are already brighter. The children sleep easier.

Whispers about Wisp

“The lanes between the fire-towers are the Skybreakers' roads, and every mile of them hums — except the Foundry span, which went perfectly silent at 2:47 a.m. for exactly eleven minutes. Stratos watched from the edge of space and saw the silence had an edge, like a cloud with a coastline. Wisp sent her ball-lightning scouts through it and they came back out of order, one missing, the rest dimmer. The missing one found its own way home at dawn. It won't say where it's been.”

A sky-lane went silent for eleven minutes.

The Stormborn

Vesper's storm-keepers — they don't predict the weather, they negotiate with it. Lightning, hail, wind, and pressure answer their call, and they answer the city's. The Stormborn charter is one sentence long: the sky provides.
