Hatchetfish
“The vanishing act of the Twilight — it erases itself with mirrors and light, and watches you fail to find it.”

The living story
The story so far
Predators hunt by looking up for silhouettes. The Hatchetfish looked at that problem and became a mirror. Its flanks are polished silver; its belly glows with exactly the brightness of the water above. From below, it simply isn't there. The Twilight's hunters have stared straight at it and seen ocean.
Happening now
It rides the migration lanes in its invisible state, close enough to the lanternfish to be family, unseen enough to be a ghost. Young hatchetfish practice their tuning at dusk, matching the fading light like musicians tuning an instrument.
What may come
Mirrors only work while there's light to match. The Hatchetfish's young are drifting deeper each generation, practicing invisibility for a darker dark. The Twilight wonders what they're preparing for.
