“The Crab Pulsar's beam stuttered — once, for less than a blink. Every Wanderer navigating by it felt the hiccup. It has never happened before.”

“Lit up the world's skies naked-eye in summer 2020 with twin blue ion and pale dust tails; NEOWISE is the summer everyone remembers.”

NEOWISE was spotted by a space telescope in March 2020 and lit up the northern summer skies like a headlight in the dark. For weeks, anyone who looked up could see her with their bare eyes, and she has been riding that summer's memory ever since.
She is out past Neptune now, cooling off and telling every rock she passes about the summer she was famous. The Wanderers tease her that fame is a comet's one true tail, but she doesn't care — she was seen.
In about 6,800 years she will swing back toward the Sun, and she has already started planning the entrance. If anyone is still looking up, she wants her second visit to be the one they tell stories about.

Comets, meteors, asteroids — they owe allegiance to no court and carry messages between all of them. Their creed: arrive, burn bright, leave before they name a holiday after you.
