The living story
The story so far
Ryugu is a spinning-top-shaped pile of loose rubble, barely held together by its own weak gravity. In 2019 Japan's Hayabusa2 touched it twice and stole pieces of it, and the samples reached Earth in 2020 carrying some of the oldest material in the solar system.
Happening now
Ryugu spins lazily, shedding the occasional pebble, unbothered by its brush with fame. Scientists are still reading its rocks like a diary, and it finds the attention faintly embarrassing.
What may come
Its spin keeps speeding up, and one day it may fling itself apart entirely — the Wanderers have a betting pool on the date. Ryugu says it will reassemble itself out of spite if it happens.
