Eta Carinae is a luminous blue variable that survived its Great Eruption of the 1840s, when it became the second-brightest star in Earth's sky and blew off ten percent of its mass. The twin-lobed Homunculus Nebula is the scar it wears proudly, because it should have died and refused.
