Atlas

“He’s Atlas.”

A Stonehide reptile of The Deep Time

The living story

The story so far

He walked the ancient islands when giants still walked — eight feet, a ton, the undisputed heavyweight of slow. He outlived the saber-tooths, the giant birds, and three ice ages, by the simple expedient of being too big to bother and too calm to hurry.

Happening now

He exists now as the Deep Time’s anchor: when the young ones get frantic, they pilgrimage to Atlas and sit. He doesn’t advise. He doesn’t console. He just... is. Eight feet of "it’s fine." The pilgrims leave calmer. Every time.

What may come

He has one story he tells — one. About the day the sky went dark (the volcano, probably) and he just kept walking. "The world," he says, "is for walking through." Then he naps. The story is complete. It’s the best story.

Whispers about Atlas

“Atlas swears the deep-time beds hum at dusk, low, like a throat clearing. Coilossus pressed his great head to the stone and listened for an hour. "It's not the earth," he said finally. "It's something under the earth. Dreaming in patterns."”

The fossil beds hum at dusk.

Why someone keeps Atlas

  • because eight feet of "it’s fine" is the best therapy
  • because his one story — "the world is for walking through" — is complete
  • because Dusty’s Big Circuit pebble came from his grotto

The Deep Time

Four the earth kept in its fossil beds: the titan serpent, the sea lizard, the giant tortoise, the super-croc — extinct titans the world refuses to forget.

Personality
The tortoise who held up the world — or felt like it. Atlas is a megalochelys, eight feet long and a ton of Pleistocene tortoise, and his amber grotto is the Deep Time’s quietest corner. He doesn’t talk much. He doesn’t need to.
