The living story
The story so far
She started keeping records as a juvenile, tallying her siblings’ fish catches on a flat stone. The stone became a wall. The wall became the Logbook. She has now recorded forty years of river history, and her memory for detail is so feared that disputes are settled by simply asking her.
Happening now
She adjudicates the fish treaty between Brine and Kubwa’s waters — the counts, the seasons, the exceptions. Both matriarchs trust her numbers. Her numbers have never been wrong. Her spectacles have never been cleaned. "They’re seasoned," she says.
What may come
She is training two apprentices in record-keeping: "Write it down. All of it. Especially the boring parts — that’s where the truth hides." The apprentices are excellent. The Logbook grows. The river remembers.

The River Tyrants
The river tyrants: crocodiles, alligators, caimans, gharials — the ambush perfected over eighty million years. Fifteen smiles, every one of them full of teeth.

- Personality
- Named for the bony "spectacles" between her eyes that make her look like the river’s librarian — which, functionally, she is. Bifocal keeps the Tyrants’ records: nest counts, fish treaties, the Great Logbook of Who Ate Whom (abridged). She sees everything. The spectacles help.

Joe was here.
“a Joe parable: the first skin is still dreaming. You’re wearing its dream. The old ones said we all wear something handed down.”
