“The Last Rattle has not rattled in forty years. Cascabel finally asked why. "I'm listening," said the old one. "Something down there is still deciding what I should sound like. I don't want to interrupt."”
The Last Rattle stopped rattling.

“Nobody has ever asked for the lullaby twice, but nobody has forgotten it either.”

He learned rhythm from the rain — or rather, from the long dry stretches between rains, when the only music was wind on stone and his own tail keeping time. He has been the desert’s metronome ever since.
Travelers through the dunes listen for him the way sailors listen for foghorns. His rattle means: turn back, or come correct. He has never once rattled without meaning it.
He is teaching young sidewinders the lullaby now, note by buzzing note. It is slow work. The desert has nothing but time, and neither does he.
