“The Last Rattle has not rattled in forty years. Cascabel finally asked why. "I'm listening," said the old one. "Something down there is still deciding what I should sound like. I don't want to interrupt."”
The Last Rattle stopped rattling.

“He shed his final skin at the century mark and came out silver — a rattle that shines like a struck bell.”

He was born the year the great river changed course, and he has marked every decade since with a new rattle segment — eleven decades, eleven notes, a whole desert symphony in his tail. The young ones call him "the metronome of the dunes."
His Second Shed came in his 110th year: he emerged silver, and his rattle’s tone dropped an octave — deeper, truer, the sound the desert makes when it’s telling the truth. He played the lullaby once, perfectly. The desert slept. He hasn’t played it since. "Once was the point."
He is teaching Cascabel the lullaby, note by buzzing note, and says the student is "close" — which from the Last Rattle means anything from a year to a decade. Cascabel practices daily. The desert waits. The lullaby is worth it.

“a Joe parable: the first skin is still dreaming. You’re wearing its dream. The old ones said we all wear something handed down.”
