The living story
The story so far
He discovered his hinge as a hatchling when a raccoon tried him and found, to its confusion, a box. He has been a box ever since — the forest’s most secure small business, open by appointment, closed by instinct.
Happening now
He runs the forest floor’s lost-property office from inside his shell: drop items through the slot, he catalogues them, pickup Thursdays. The system is flawless. The hours are "when I feel like it." Everyone respects this.
What may come
He is composing a memoir titled "Closed: A Life." It is 400 pages long. He has shown it to no one. "It’s finished," he says, latching shut. "That’s the point."

Why someone keeps Latch
- because a front door you carry with you is the ultimate boundary
- because his lost-property office runs on "when I feel like it" and it works
- because "Closed: A Life" is 400 pages no one will ever read, and that’s perfect
The Ancient Shells
The shelled ones: sea turtles, tortoises, terrapins, snappers — the slowest hearts and the longest memories. Fifteen shells, none of them in any hurry at all.

Joe was here.
“a Joe parable: the first skin is still dreaming. You’re wearing its dream. The old ones said we all wear something handed down.”
