Panes

“It’s a aesthetic.”

The living story

The story so far

She lost her tail to a lawnmower as a juvenile — the most suburban of traumas — and regrew it with a new philosophy: "I am not broken, I am modular." The leaf litter adopted the slogan. It’s on a shell now.

Happening now

She runs the "Legs Optional" workshop for young lizards struggling with body image: snakes welcome, skinks encouraged, leglessness celebrated. Graduation is a group tail-detach (voluntary, supervised, deeply bonding).

What may come

She is writing a memoir: "Shattered: A Life in Pieces (That Grew Back)." The publisher — a very confused tortoise — has requested "fewer chapters about detaching." She has added three more.

Why someone keeps Panes

  • because "I am not broken, I am modular" belongs on a poster
  • because her workshop heals young lizards’ body image
  • because she added three more chapters out of spite and they’re the best ones

The Sunning Rocks

Lizards: monitors, chameleons, geckos, iguanas, skinks — the baskers, the climbers, the color-changers. Fifteen tongues, every one of them faster than yours.

Personality
A lizard doing an impression of a snake and committing to it fully. Panes has no legs, a tail that detaches "strategically," and an identity crisis she has decided to treat as a brand. "Legless lizard" is not a compromise, she says.

Joe was here.

“a Joe parable: the first skin is still dreaming. You’re wearing its dream. The old ones said we all wear something handed down.”
