It has no mouth. It has no stomach. It has no use for either: the Vent Tubeworm's great red plume houses chemosynthetic bacteria that eat vent poison and exhale food. Whole cities of vent life anchor around its tubes — the mouthless one feeds them all without ever taking a bite.
Its plume-fields rise behind the grazing grounds like a red forest, breathing the vent's chemistry. The Compact's charter begins here: the farmers farm, the armorers armor, and the Tubeworm simply breathes, feeding the city.
Vents die — every chimney goes cold eventually. When the flow stops, the plume-fields go with it, and the city moves on. The Tubeworm's larvae are already drifting, looking for the next fire.

A desert with oases of fire. At the hydrothermal vents, farmers, armorers, and grazers divide chimney rights — and the Osedax sisterhood tends every fallen whale as sacred ground.
