The living story
The story so far
She claimed her pool as a hatchling — the only one nobody wanted, too small, too shallow — and spent years perfecting it. The water is clearer, the lilies are happier, and the minnows, she insists, are "better educated" than river fish.
Happening now
She conducts the pond census every spring: every resident, counted twice, recorded on bark. Bifocal certified it "the most accurate in the Tyrants." Shortstack keeps the certificate shell-taped where she can see it. She looks at it daily.
What may come
She is expanding — a second pool, connected by a "canal" (a very ambitious ditch). Construction is 60% complete. The minnows have been consulted. The lilies are excited. The pond will soon be plural.
