He dug his first gator hole as a juvenile, following an instinct older than the swamp, and watched the dry season come — and watched everything gather at his hole to drink. "Oh," he said, understanding his purpose all at once. He has been digging ever since.
His holes are the swamp’s infrastructure: drought refuges, fish nurseries, turtle sundecks. He maintains fourteen of them. He knows each one’s depth, clientele, and "vibe." The vibe matters. He’s particular.
He is planning the Big Hole — a drought refuge so deep and wide it’ll water the swamp through the worst dry season on record. He’s been surveying for a year. The turtles have already booked sundecks. Construction starts at the first thunder.
“Basso bellowed at the winter moon and the pond ice cracked in a perfect spiral, ring within ring. Bayou measured it twice. "That's not a crack," she said at last. "That's a pattern." Basso has not bellowed since. He is waiting to see if it happens again.”
