Burrower dug her burrow the spring the floods came and lined it with silk and pure intention. She has a trapdoor, a trip-line perimeter, and a policy: she has not been surprised since 2019, and she intends to keep it that way.
She is currently holding her trapdoor shut with her fangs because something large just walked over — vibrations say mammal, probably harmless, definitely uninvited. Burrower is not opening the door. Burrower never opens the door.
She will outwait the seasons in her silk-lined fortress, emerging only for the brief, necessary business of dinner and courtship. The burrow will outlast her. The policy will not change.
“She has lived in the same bark crevice for years and knows every sound it makes. Last winter it made a new one: a slow drawing-in, like a breath, like something vast remembering how to inhale.
