The living story
The story so far
Longjaw hatched on a blade of grass at the pond's edge and has been holding perfectly still, more or less, ever since. Stretched along a single stem like a held breath, she is all elbows and patience, and she has outwaited every living thing that ever doubted her.
Happening now
She has not moved in four hours. A dragonfly landed nearby; Longjaw did not blink, because she has no eyelids and also because she is committed. The dragonfly will move first. They always do.
What may come
When the pond freezes she will tuck her sac into the reeds and vanish into the thatch. Next spring, the first warm day, something impossibly thin will be waiting on the first green blade. It will be her, or her daughter. You will not be able to tell, and she prefers it that way.
