“Tule's trunk was measured again. Still the widest on Earth. He celebrated by shading the whole village square. The village brought pie. The pie was also the widest.”

The living story
The story so far
The Skyreach measures height, and Tule cannot win — so he invented a contest he cannot lose. El Árbol del Tule, the Montezuma cypress of Oaxaca, has the greatest trunk girth of any tree on Earth: forty-two meters around, a living fortress it takes thirty people holding hands to hug. Once a year he hosts the Embracing: challengers from every faction link arms around his trunk and fail, joyfully, to meet fingertips. The Skyreach height-chasers attend out of duty and leave out of love. "You race upward," Tule tells them, grand as a cathedral door. "I race outward. The ground, you will find, is also infinite." His roots drink from a spring the Zapotecs called sacred; his shade has sheltered two thousand years of markets, weddings, and revolutions. Girth, he insists, is just height that decided to stay home.
