“Methus and Tjikko were overheard arguing about who is older. Tjikko: 'My roots.' Methus: 'My face.' The argument is nine thousand five hundred years old. The score is tied.”

Methus
“Methus is a bristlecone pine — 5,000 years, the oldest non-clonal living thing — and he looks like weather made wood.”

The living story
The story so far
Methus grew where nothing should grow — dolomite scree, thin air, killing wind — and that is exactly why he is still here. At nearly five thousand years, the Methuselah of the White Mountains is the oldest known non-clonal tree on Earth, and he earned every ring the hard way: a millimeter a year, twisted into sculpture by storms that flattened forests below. "Hurry," he tells the ambitious young conifers, "is how trees become lumber." He has watched empires rise in the time it took him to add an inch of girth. His theory of the Missing Ring is the faction's favorite: "That year, I was growing so slowly no one would notice a missing ring. Don't ask me. Ask the fast growers — they're the ones with something to hide." The Ancient Ones laugh, and then they go very quiet, because he is probably right.

Whispers about Methus
“Methus counts his rings every winter. Every winter he stops at the same place, touches the bark, and starts over. No one has ever seen him finish.”
“The dendrochronologists found a single wooden footprint in the missing year's sediment: one print, pointing away from every tree in the grove. The footprint is gone now. The sediment remembers it anyway.”
