“Methus and Tjikko were overheard arguing about who is older. Tjikko: 'My roots.' Methus: 'My face.' The argument is nine thousand five hundred years old. The score is tied.”

The living story
The story so far
The tree you see is a teenager. The roots are older than the pyramids. Tjikko is a Norway spruce on a Swedish fell whose visible trunk is a few centuries young — but the root system beneath has been cloning itself for nine and a half thousand years, since the ice itself retreated. "People photograph the trunk," they say, dry as lichen. "No one photographs the part that matters." Storms have killed Tjikko's crowns a hundred times; the roots simply sent up another. They are the Ancient Ones' reminder that what survives is rarely what shows. Young trees come boasting of their height, and Tjikko listens, and says nothing, and the young trees eventually look down — really look — and understand. Of the Missing Ring they offer one sentence, and it ends every debate in the faction: "The rings are the trunk's diary. The roots keep a different book."
