Centurion

Centurion lost the world by thirty centimeters. For years his kind — the mountain ash, tallest flowering tree in the Southern Hemisphere — held the record for the tallest flowering plant on Earth, until a 2019 tape measurement in Borneo crowned Menara's yellow meranti a hand's-breadth taller. He took it the way old soldiers take a lost battle: standing straight, with grace, and a private vow. Now the two exchange growth reports across the equator like fencers exchanging letters — polite, precise, and utterly without mercy. "One hundred meters," his latest reads. "The air is fine. Come and take it back if the soil allows." The Skyreach holds its breath every measuring season. Centurion insists it is only sport. But on windless nights, the faction swears they can hear him growing — creak by creak, centimeter by centimeter, toward Borneo.
