Sequoya

The Skyreach worships height, and Sequoya cannot be bothered to be tall. She is a giant sequoia — General Sherman's kin, the largest living things by volume on the planet — and while the redwoods race for the sky, she has been quietly winning the other contest: mass. Thirty-six feet across at the base. A trunk you could park a fleet in. When the young height-chasers mock her modest crown, she lets the wind move through three thousand tons of living wood and says, "The sky is not the only measure." Her bark is two feet thick and fireproof; she has survived a hundred blazes that took the tall and the slender. The faction keeps its height records on scrolls; Sequoya keeps the weight of the world on her shoulders, and has never once been seen to strain. Even Hyperion, the tallest, inclines when she passes.
