Hyperion

Hyperion is the tallest known living thing on Earth — three hundred and eighty feet of coast redwood, a cathedral spire with bark — and he has not spoken at a Skyreach council in forty years. The faction's law is simple: who touches the sky speaks first. For decades that was him, and he said little even then. Now the measurers come with their laser tapes, the young giants crane upward, and Hyperion simply continues the slow work of being taller than everything, the way he has since before the measuring began. "Doesn't he fear Menara's crown?" the saplings whisper. The old ones smile. Hyperion's silence is not fear; it is the confidence of a tree who watched a hundred challengers grow, peak, and fall while he added another ring. Height, he believes, is not a contest. It is a condition. The sky does not compete with the ground.
