Jomon

Jomon has stood in the mists of Yakushima since before the island had a name. The Jōmon Sugi — a Japanese cedar millennia old, named for a pottery age — grows where the rain never truly stops, in cloud forest so ancient the moss has moss. Pilgrims climb for hours through the white to reach him, and he receives them the way old gods receive worship: without moving, which is the whole of the teaching. His trunk twists like a prayer; his crown disappears into weather. "Hurry," the young cedars say, racing for light. Jomon, who has watched ten thousand hurries come and go, says nothing — the mist says it for him. Of the Missing Ring he offers only what the mountain offers: fog, and the certainty that something enormous is standing quietly inside it.
