The story so far
The arrau is South America's largest river turtle, and its great ritual is the arribada — the mass nesting when thousands of females haul out onto the beaches together, as their ancestors did for millennia, a synchronized act of motherhood on a geological scale. Arribada leads the Mirror's arribada-clans in the same spirit: the living turtles' sacred duty is tending the Mirror's memory, and she organizes it the way her species organizes everything — together, patiently, in numbers no one can argue with. Victoria reigns as uncrowned queen; Arribada does the work of the reign — the census of reflections, the tending of Hornshell's ancient routes, the welcoming of every new turtle to the duty. 'Memory,' she tells the hatchlings, 'is a beach. We all haul out together, or not at all.'
