The story so far
The Surinam toad's reproduction is the Amazon's most alien tenderness: the female's back skin swells around each fertilized egg, sealing the young into her own flesh for months until fully formed toadlets burst free. Backbirth has done this more times than the Root-Deep can count, and it shows — in the patience, in the authority, in the way the whole faction goes quiet when she speaks. Burrowlord's commonwealth and Muta's court have their politics; Backbirth has her brood-cells, and that ends the discussion. 'Armor,' she told Muta once, 'is what you wear when you have no one to carry.' Muta never answered. Nobody does.
