The story so far
The tapir is the Amazon's great gardener and doesn't know it: wandering miles each night, eating fruit, and planting the forest in its droppings — seeds carried farther than any wind, fertilized, ready. Whole groves are tapir-planted. Softnose walks the Root-Deep the same way, and the faction's oldest trails are lined with trees she doesn't remember planting. 'The forest,' she says, heavy-lidded and slow, 'is just my droppings, given time.' The young laugh; the old don't. Longtongue calls her the commons' co-founder. Backbirth once told her, 'You mother without carrying,' and Softnose thought about that for a season.
