The living story
The story so far
The arapaima cannot live without the surface — hold her down and she drowns in water. Pirarucu has made a philosophy of it: everything living must rise, regularly, to breathe, and anyone who forgets is already sinking. Her scales are mineralized armor; river people once filed their nails on her tongue's bony plate, and she permits the story to be told because it amuses her. She and Encantado argue endlessly about the flood — blessing or siege — and she is right that it is a siege, because she has survived enough of them to know. Old Scarback is her grown shadow; she pretends not to watch him with pride.
