The common basilisk does what the Oxbow Mirror only pretends to do: it stands on water. Hind feet slapping the surface faster than the body can sink, fringed toes spreading the weight, sprinting across ponds like the laws of physics were a suggestion — the 'Jesus lizard,' named for the miracle. Ripplefoot is the Mirror's miracle made routine: the fastest messenger between the Mirror's stillness and the Drift's motion, carrying news on feet that never get wet. The turtles find him undignified. Victoria finds him amusing. The young find him the most exciting thing on the water, and he knows it, and he plays to it shamelessly — right up until the message matters, when the grin goes professional and the feet go faster than gossip.
