The giant otter is the Amazon's great contradiction: the world's largest otter, nearly two meters of muscle and whiskers, hunting in loud, close, joyful family packs — and those packs are so fierce, so coordinated, that they can drive off caimans, the river's armored tyrants. Each otter's throat-blaze is unique as a fingerprint. Riverwolf leads the Mirror's guard the way his species hunts: together, loudly, and without a hint of fear. Victoria's court is stillness and reflection; Riverwolf's pack is the noise the stillness is measured against — beloved, rowdy, utterly reliable. When the Mirror's memory needs defending, the turtles tend and the queen floats; the pack arrives like weather, whiskers first, and the trouble leaves. 'Family,' Riverwolf says, 'is the only armor that gets louder when it's hit.'
