A kea, the alpine parrot of New Zealand, and the class clown of the bird world. He dismantles windshield wipers, unzips backpacks, and solves puzzles faster than the scientists can build them. Mischief is not what he does. It is what he is.
He is currently investigating a backpack left by a hiker. The hiker will want it back. The hiker will not get it back intact.
The scientists are building a harder puzzle. He is already bored by the concept of it.

Here is what happened: the week after, a pale bill was glimpsed working dead wood at dawn — the first glimpse in eleven years — and beside the fresh holes, arranged neatly, were three bottle caps, shiny side up.
