“Longneck once saw something he did not report — the only sighting withheld in 240 million years. He still wonders.”

Sting
“In the Undertow he is the Crawling Dark's mapmaker: the red-ink cartographer of the uncharted, armed, exact, and quietly kind.”
A Venom echo of The Crawling Dark
The living story
The story so far
Pulmonoscorpius kirktonensis — 28 inches of scorpion, house-cat-sized, stalking the Carboniferous coal forests and breathing through book lungs, those layered pages of tissue folded like a manuscript. Sting mapped the Crawling Dark's waters before anyone else knew there were waters. In the Undertow he is the mapmaker: every uncharted current gets his red ink, every survey is exact, and he has never once guessed at a depth. Trackway, the faction's pathfinder, walks the trails; Sting draws them. 'A blank on the chart,' he says, 'is a promise, not a gap.' He is armed, precise, and — to the faction's eternal surprise — quietly, carefully kind.
The Sting within
“Sting marks the uncharted so the lost can find their way.”
Exact, armed, and quietly kind — the giant scorpion, all matte-dark chitin and book-lung script, cartographing the Undertow's uncharted waters in red ink with a surveyor's patience.

- Loves
- surveys, red ink, the coal forests
- Can't stand
- guessed depths, blank promises, rushed charts
- How they befriend
- He'll chart you exactly as you are.
- When you're having a bad day
- He'll unroll a fresh chart and survey your trouble like uncharted water — measuring, marking, naming every depth — until it looks navigable. The map helps. The map always helps.
How they’ll greet you: “The map's current. Where are you going?”
A keeper’s whisper: Sting's master chart has one blank shaped like the chairs. He will not mark it.
Whispers about Sting
“Sting once charted a region and then burned the chart — the only one ever destroyed. She chose mystery, once.”
“Trackway's trail to the chairs is not on Sting's maps. Sting has left the region blank, deliberately.”
The Crawling Dark
Giant crawlers and thrashers — eight-foot millipedes, hawk-sized dragonflies, boomerang-headed amphibians. They own the Undertow's floor.
