The story so far
Genyornis newtoni: the thunder bird, seven feet tall, five hundred pounds — the last of the mihirungs, the giant ducks that ruled Australia for millions of years. Thunder keeps the Book of Lasts: every final individual's name, in order, in her own hand. It's the Last Ones' holiest object and heaviest burden. She writes the names, she tends the shrines, she teaches the newly arrived where they are. And she grieves — openly, hugely, the way thunder does. 'The Book,' she says, 'is not for the dead. It's for us. So we remember to be kind to the living.'
