“On the coldest nights the flames lean toward the treeline, as if making room for someone. Luna goes still and Biscuit stops mid-wag. Nobody mentions it in the morning.”
Watch the fire, not the dark.

“He once carried a lost toddler's shoe three blocks home because somebody had to.”

Biscuit was not always the standard. As a puppy he chewed the standard — specifically, the good rug, the bad rug, and one heirloom slipper. Then one winter he carried a lost toddler's shoe three whole blocks home, and the neighborhood decided: this is what a good boy is. He's been trying to live up to it ever since, and mostly succeeding.
There's a new kid on the street who doesn't talk much yet, and Biscuit has appointed himself the boy's personal weighted blanket. He leans against the kid's legs during every thunderstorm, heavy as a promise, and the kid's mother cries a little every time she sees it. Biscuit pretends not to notice. He notices.
The street is quietly fundraising for a small statue of Biscuit for the park. Biscuit would hate the fuss and love the pigeons that would sit on it. Either way, the leaning will continue — that's not a phase, that's a calling.

“Luna visited the edge of the porch at dusk, and every house dog went silent. Biscuit — Biscuit, who has never met a stranger — lay down and put his head on his paws. When she left, he retrieved a shoe and carried it three blocks. Nobody knows why.”
The ancestor inspects the proof.
The companions: goldens, corgis, pugs, bulldogs — the dogs on the couch, in the bed, under the table at dinner. Politics: whoever is closest to the human wins. The human is always the territory.
