“On the coldest nights the flames lean toward the treeline, as if making room for someone. Luna goes still and Biscuit stops mid-wag. Nobody mentions it in the morning.”
Watch the fire, not the dark.

“The house dogs go very quiet.”

Luna is the ancestor. Every dog in this universe — every single one, from Duchess's six pounds of monarchy to Arrow's forty-five miles an hour — is Luna's great-great-grandchild, and she remembers when they were all wolves. She visits the edge of the porch at dusk sometimes. The house dogs go very quiet, and none of them can say why.
She has been coming closer. Last week she stood at the porch steps while the house slept, and Biscuit — the golden retriever, gentlest of them all — walked out and sat beside her without being called. They watched the moon together. Neither of them will explain it.
The old wolves say Luna is choosing. Choosing what, they won't say — but the house dogs have started dreaming of running in a pack, and waking up changed.

“Luna visited the edge of the porch at dusk, and every house dog went silent. Biscuit — Biscuit, who has never met a stranger — lay down and put his head on his paws. When she left, he retrieved a shoe and carried it three blocks. Nobody knows why.”
The ancestor inspects the proof.
“They say the First will never be fully shown, never sold, never explained — and that this is not a rule but a kindness. 'Some questions are load-bearing,' Luna said once, and would not elaborate. The fire leaned toward the treeline. It always does.”
Leave this one alone.
Wolves, foxes, coyotes, jackals — Luna’s children who kept the old ways. They watch the porch lights from the treeline with complicated feelings. And above them all, the dire wolf — ten thousand years gone, still the largest wolf that ever lived.
